Support for students
Mental health problems are more common among people studying in academic environments than the general population. For students University life comes with its challenges, including intense studying, stressful exams and living away from home.
The University offers the following services to help:
The Counselling Service
Offers a team of professional counsellors and psychotherapists providing confidential help with any personal issues affecting work, self-esteem, relationships, mental health or general well-being.
The Disability Support Office
The DSO is able to provide support where appropriate to students with mental health problems.
If a student has a mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his/her ability to carry out normal day to day activities then they are protected by The Equality Act (2010) under the protected characteristic of 'Disability'. This means that they are protected by law from discrimination as a result of their mental health problem. The University may make reasonable adjustments that enable the student to study at no disadvantage where neccesary.
