Gender reassignment
-
The Gender Recognition Act 2004 allows transsexual people to change their legal gender.
Gender equality means the fair and equal treatment of all genders, including Trans* people of all genders. By trans we include people to choose to live in the opposite gender and those who have gone through or are going through a gender re-assignment including medical and/or social transition and all people who identify with a gender that does not match their assigned sex at birth.
A person has the protected characteristic of 'gender re-assignment' if that person "is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person’s sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex."
It should be noted that a person is protected once they have proposed to transition, even if they later change their mind. This is the case whether or not they are under medical supervision.
When providing goods or services it is unlawful to discriminate against or harass a trans person and the University takes great care to avoid any type of discrimination, either by management or workers in the course of their employment.
