Sexual orientation
Sexual orientation refers to the attraction a person feels towards one sex or another (or both), which determines who they form intimate relationships with.
- Some people are only attracted to those of the same sex (lesbian women and gay men).
- Some people are attracted to people of both sexes (bisexual people).
- Some people are only attracted to the opposite sex (heterosexual people).
Everyone is protected from being treated adversely because of sexual orientation, whether they are bisexual, gay, lesbian or heterosexual.
We submit annually to both the Stonewall Employer Index and the more Student Focussed Gay By Degree. Gay By Degree includes profiles for every university in the UK and gives the university’s contact details, fees and average UCAS tariff scores of new students and if there’s a specific student society for lesbian, gay and bisexual students, their web address. There’s also info about the university and the local area, including the local gay scene, and anything else you might find useful when making your choice. For the 2015 listing we have added two more ticks - giving us 8/10!

News
November 20th, 2014 was Transgender Day of Remembrance which is a day of memorialisation for those who have been killed as a result of transphobia. This day is also used to underline the continued hostility towards the transgender community. Manchester is proudly one of 185 cities in over 20 countries who observe this tradition. We had the Trans flag flying on campus as well as a lunchtime seminar on Trans experiences.
September 23rd, 2014 was Bi-Visibility Day. Bi Visibility Day, also known as International Celebrate Bisexuality Day, has been marked each year since 1999 to highlight biphobia and to help people find the bisexual community. To mark this special day we had the bisexual flag flying on campus at the University.

February 2015 is LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans) History Month. This annual event gives us the opportunity to look at LGBT equality and raise awareness of any issues faced by LGBT students as well as celebrate the community at Manchester. There will be a full timetable of events coming in January 2015.

Sometimes LGBT Students feel more comfortable talking to someone outside of the organisation. Therefore the following site might prove useful:
Stonewall

The University has joined Britain’s good practice employers’ forum on sexual orientation, run by Stonewall, the charity that works for equality and justice for lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. The Diversity Champion programme provides us with access to a wide range of support and resources to ensure that we are an inclusive/supportive place to work, study or visit. |
